Last week while surfing the “interwebs” both looking for planting guidance as well as photos for the site I stumbled upon an article written by Gloria at The Side-out Foundation. In this particular post that drew me in, Gloria spoke first about the beauty of her daylilies and then her constant fight with cancer. It was inspirational to me the juxtoposition of the beautiful garden that she loves and tends to daily against the terrible battle that she wages each day against cancer. My curiosity got the best of me and I asked Gloria for some photos of her daylily garden. Here they are.

Daylilies are one of the easiest to grow of all hardy flowers. Plant them once-that’s all there is to it. They grow with little care… reproduce annually… are immune to pests and diseases… yet they bloom with spectacular beauty week after week, year after year. This video demonstrates how to divide reblooming daylilies.

This morning I found a video tutorial that answers the question “How to divide daylilies”.

Fast Tube by Casper
Martha Cycz (in this video) has been a perennial backyard gardener for more than 20 years. She was filmed by Christian Munoz-Donoso. Ms. Cycz has produced several videos demonstrating the “how-to” gumption of a seasoned gardener.

When I watched the video for the first time I thought that she had most certainly killed the plant by driving the shovel through the center of its root stock.
Watch, and be the judge!

The perennial favorite, Hemerocallis is coming into season yet again!
This photo was shared by audrejm529 on Flickr.com and appears to be a Bright Sunset Reblooming Daylily. While this variety is fairly common in my area, it seems to have a neat additional feature, deer steer clear of this variety!! I truly believe that without these reblooming daylilies my hosta would not have a chance! There is nothing more dissapointing than waking up to find all of your 6-7 year old hostas chewed down to the nub. Using the Bright Sunset reblooming daylilies as beautiful perimeter “garlic” that can ward off those pesky white tail “vampires”! These may also help protect other more tender varieties of day lily that deer DO love to eat! I have also found that hellebores, prairie sage, poppy and lamb’s ear when planted alongside your daylilies can defend from deer attack.
